To solve a problem,

we need a brain.

To have a brain,

we need a heart.

To have a heart,

we need empathy.

To have empathy,

we need to be

HUMAN.

Bearing his family crest "Cur Non?" the Marquis de Lafayette left France at nineteen years old and sailed to America in 1777 to join the American Revolution and fight for the ideas of freedom and liberty. After becoming George Washington’s trusted right hand man and “adopted son,” he has been memorialized as le Héro de Deux Mondes. Today, the liberal arts engineering college that carries his name respects the idea of connecting two worlds—liberal arts and engineering—for the embetterment of humankind.

My intentional choice of Lafayette was to complement my affinity for subjects within the humanities with science, technology, engineering, and math. Specifically, with a passion for energy and energy systems, I chose Chemical Engineering as my main course of study. Through this major, I have enjoyed developing an engineering mindset that has given me a newfound respect for technical nuance and the importance of data driven rationale.
